The RFID tag is not working

Your RFID tag or charge card does not start a charging session? Use this checklist to find the cause.

Most RFID problems come from a setting, the order in which you plug in and present the tag, or a tag that is not accepted. Start with the quick checks. Then check how the charging station reacts when you present your tag.

1. Quick checks
  1. The charging station is online. See How to check the connectivity of an EV Line product.
  2. The "Stop" button is not selected in the Smappee app, and the charging station is not set to unavailable.
  3. The charging station uses a session activation method that needs a tag. If it is set to charge without a tag, presenting a tag does nothing. See How do I activate a Smappee Smart Charge Card or other RFID card?
  4. Are you using a public charge card (from another provider)? Then the charging station must be set up to accept public tags. See How can I use a third party CPMS?
2. Present the tag in the right order and place

EV Wall, EV One and EV Base: first plug the charging cable into the car. Wait until the LED turns blue. Then present your tag.

  • No blue light after plugging in? Check that the cable is fully plugged in on both ends, and check the session activation method (step 3 above).
  • EV Base: each connector has its own RFID reader. Present your tag at the reader on the side of the connector you use, and watch the LED on that side.

EV Wall V4, EV One V4 and EV Dual: the display shows the status in plain text. With recent firmware, you can also present the tag first and plug in the cable afterwards. The display shows whether the tag is accepted once the cable is connected.

Note: On the first-generation EV Base (EV Base V1), one RFID reader is shared by both connectors, so you can only authenticate one session at a time.
3. How does the charging station react to your tag?
What you see and hear What it means What to do
Beep, LED turns green (or the display shows the tag is accepted) The tag works. If the car still does not charge, the cause is not the tag.
Beep, LED turns red (or the display shows the tag is rejected) The tag is read, but refused. See section 4.
No beep, no reaction The tag is not read. See section 5.
4. The tag is refused

Check the setting that matches the session activation method of the charging station:

  • Whitelisting: is the tag registered on the whitelist of this charging station?
  • Split billing: is the contract linked to the tag already activated?
  • Public charging: is the charging station set up to accept public tags, and is your card valid on that network? For a card from another provider, contact the provider of that card.

See How do I activate a Smappee Smart Charge Card or other RFID card?

5. No beep when you present the tag
  1. Check that the car is detected. After plugging in, the LED should turn blue (or the display should show the cable is connected). No reaction after plugging in means the charging station does not detect the car. That is not an RFID problem. Try another car or cable if possible, and contact support.
  2. Switch the power off and back on. Switch off the circuit breaker of the charging station, wait a moment, and switch it back on. Then try the tag again.
  3. For installers: check the firmware card in the Smappee Dashboard. The RFID reader must be shown as found. On older models it is listed as RFID reader, on newer models as AC charge controller + RFID.
  4. Still no beep? Contact support with the information below.
6. Still not working? Contact support

Add this information to your request so we can help you faster:

  • Serial number of the charging station, and on an EV Base the connector you used
  • What the LED or display showed after plugging in and after presenting the tag
  • The type of tag (Smappee charge card or a card from another provider)
  • The session activation method in use
  • Date and time of the failed attempt
  • Installers: a screenshot of the firmware card in the Smappee Dashboard
