Configuration of the Cascade Overload Protection

Protect every fuse in the hierarchy, not just the main grid connection.

For general background on what Cascade Overload Protection is and when you need it, see Cascade Overload Protection: what is it and what impact does it have?

Regular overload protection only protects your main grid connection. Cascade Overload Protection lets you protect the fuses of every panel in between as well, for example a submetered office building or a secondary distribution board feeding a group of charging stations. Each level in that hierarchy gets its own maximum current.

Prerequisite: every circuit you want to protect, for example the charging square in the example below, must already be defined and measured as its own separate circuit. If that measurement isn't set up first, it can't be added to the Cascade Overload Protection hierarchy.
Note: Cascade Overload Protection is only configured through the Smappee Dashboard, there is no app equivalent.
Example used in this article

The screenshots below are based on this setup:

  • A primary distribution panel, main fuse 400A max
  • A submetered office building
  • A submetered secondary distribution panel for the charging square, fuse 200A max
  • 5 EV Base units with double connector (11kW each), connected to that secondary distribution panel

Step-by-step

  1. In the Smappee Dashboard, add the "Cascade Overload Protection" card to an existing board, or create a new board for it.
  2. Click Select loads and tick every load that needs to be part of the hierarchy, in this example that's the office building, the charging square, and the charging stations on that charging square.
  3. After adding them, all loads sit on the same level underneath the Grid. Drag and drop them to build the actual hierarchy, in this example, dragging "Academy charging station" underneath "Charging Square".
  4. For each level, set the maximum current that circuit's own fuse allows, in this example 200A on the charging square.
  5. Click Save to register the changes.

Once saved, Cascade Overload Protection is active for that location, protecting every fuse in the hierarchy, not just the main grid connection.
